I'm currently studying agroecology and community education at Cornell University. I work with NYC gardeners and food justice organizations to develop ecologically-based gardening practices and participatory education programs in urban agriculture. From 2004-2008, I served as an Agroforestry and Environmental Education Volunteer in Peace Corps/ El Salvador.
On this blog I'll be posting pictures showing my vegetable garden growing (hopefully...I'm new at this) through the season. I'll also add pictures of other ways I'm striving to involve myself in producing my food, and procuring sustainably grown food from my local community. I find that there's nothing like working in the garden or visiting a farm to remind me that, as Wendell Berry notes, "Eating is an agricultural act." Enjoy!
The Garden Song (as sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary)
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground Inch by inch, row by row, Someone bless these seeds I sow. Someone warm them from below Til the rain comes tumbling down
Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones, We are made of dreams and bones. I feel the need to grow my own cause the time is close at hand. Grain for grain, sun and rain. I'll find my way in nature's chain, Tune my body and my brain to the music of the land.
Plant your rows straight and long, Temper them with prayer and song. Mother earth will keep you strong if you give her love and care. An old crow watches hungrily from his perch in yonder tree. In my garden I'm as free as that feathered thief up there!
